MUSIC: Arthur & Yu

Got the new album by Arthur & Yu in the mail over the weekend (which I ordered from the newly launched Hardly Art record label) and was able to fully digest it in the last 24 hours. It's a romantic and fuzzy album, creating an intimate space for the listener; it's also surprisingly forceful for one reason or another, as repeated listens increased the sound's gravity. While that last sentence is long, confusing, and quite obtuse, it's the only way I could accurately describe how the album made me feel. Guess all you need to know is this: It's good. Cue the track.

::: Arthur & Yu - Come to View (Song for Neil Young)

You can buy their debut LP on Hardly Art, titled In Camera, over at the label's website.

NEW MUSIC: Pet Politics

Magnus (aka Pet Politics) was kind enough to send over an excellent new track, and I currently think of it as the perfect companion to an unmotivated Monday. It's a damn good song.

::: Pet Politics - When I Get Old

Remember that you can buy an excellent 4-song Pet Politics EP from Catbird Records for only 3 bucks. Now that's a deal.

MUSIC: The Press

Caught wind of this great band through their label, Goodnight Records, and was immediately impressed. The Press, a Brooklyn via Atlanta via Boston four-piece, are certainly planted in the angular indie rock sounds so popular these days, but they bring an energetic approach that calls back to some of my favorite bands (touchstones such as The Talking Heads). Here's a track off their upcoming EP.

::: The Press - Krab Teeth

Currently, you can buy their previous EP and 7-inch from Goodnight Records. The new EP titled "Milk, and the Times that Never Were" will be released on September 18.

MUSIC: The Tunnel

Recently caught a set by a new local (SF) band called The Tunnel at the most interesting Eagle Tavern. This two-person set-up (Jeff Wagner and Patrick Crawford) played an electric set in what was apparently their first show. Their sound immediately made connections to the work of Nick Drake, with lurching dark powerful tracks. Although it's a minimalist set-up, the sound is anything but. Here are some tracks.

::: The Tunnel - Drop Dead Delilah [highly rec'd]
::: The Tunnel - Nicely Done
::: The Tunnel - Shifty Shambles

These are the first three songs off their new EP. If you want a copy of the whole thing, just go on over to their website and email them to get one for yourself.

MUSIC: The Lodger

One of my favorite labels, Slumberland Records, has a new release out by The Lodger. This three piece outfit coming out of Leeds plays crashing British pop that recalls The Buzzcocks, The Smiths, and The Wedding Present. Here are a couple tracks off of the new release titled Grown-Ups.

::: The Lodger - Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion
::: The Lodger - Kicking Sand
::: The Lodger - My Advice Is On Loan

Cruise on over to the Slumberland site for a few more MP3's and ordering info.

HMMMM: Wolf Parade

So I've been wondering what the good boys of Wolf Parade are up to of late since it's been all side projects of late (or is Wolf Parade a side project, I'm not quite sure at this point), from Spencer Krug's Sunset Rubdown to Dan Boeckner's Handsome Furs. (Not that I really mind, as I'm a fan across the board). Anyhow, looks like WP have some shows at the end of the summer (not anywhere near the west coast), with one new one added in Montreal due to popular demand. Hell, if you live in North Caroline, there still may be some time left for you as well! Here are those dates.

Aug 11 - Kingston, ON (Wolf Island Music Festival) [sold out]
Aug 19 - Brooklyn, NY (Warsaw) [sold out]
Aug 20 - Philadelphia, PA (Theatre of Living Arts) [sold out]
Aug 21 - Washington, DC (Black Cat) [sold out]
Aug 22 - Carroboro, NC (Cat's Cradle) [buy]
Aug 24 - Montreal, QC (La Sala Rossa) [sold out]
Aug 25 - Montreal, QC (La Sala Rossa) [sold out]
Aug 26 - Montreal, QC (La Sala Rossa) [sold out]
Aug 27 - Montreal, QC (La Sala Rossa) [buy]

It's also time for the new Believer Magazine music issue, which reminded me of this excellent track from a couple years back.

::: Wolf Parade - Claxxon's Lament (Frog Eyes / Blackout Beach cover)

I'm exciting about diving into the accompanying Cue the Bugle Turbulent CD (tracklist below) to the new issue. Gorilla vs Bear has an mp3 of the Zach Condon (Beirut) track while Stereogum streams the Sufjan Stevens song.

1. Deerhunter, “Hazel St.”
2. No Age, “Everybody’s Down”
3. Oxford Collapse, “Please Visit Your National Parks”
4. Sufjan Stevens, “In the Words of the Governor”
5. I’m From Barcelona, “The Painter”
6. Aesop Rock, “The Next Big Thing”
7. Reykjavík!, “Rex”
8. YACHT, “I Believe In You”
9. The Twilight Sad, “Watching That Chair Painted Yellow”
10. Of Montreal, “Du Og Meg”
11. Page France, “Without a Diamond Ring”
12. Clogs, “I Used To Do”
13. The Blow, “Parentheses” (Rory Phillips Remix)
14. Bill Fox, “My Baby Crying”
15. Explosions In The Sky, “The Long Spring”
16. Magik Markers, “Body Rot” (the no nude mix)
17. The Drones, “I Don’t Ever Want To Change”
18. Zach Condon, “Venice”
19. Lightning Bolt, “Deceiver”
20. Grizzly Bear, “Easier” (Alternate)”

Soft Abuse has released an extremely limited edition (only 60 pressed) of Blackout Beach's original version of Claxxon's Lament. Thanks to Catbirdseat for the reminder on this fact. Someone should buy me this. Here's that original version.

::: Blackout Beach - Claxxon's Lament

Speaking of the Handsome Furs album, I'm actually in love with this track off of Plague Park. The album has steadily gained momentum in my head, so much so that it probably deserves a full review. Certainly top 10 material so far.

::: Handsome Furs - What We Had

Sunset Rubdown has a new album coming out via Jagjaguwar in October, who've provided this tentative tracklist.

1. The Mending of the Gown
2. Magic vs. Midas
3. Up on your Leopard, Upon the End of your Feral Days
4. The Courtesan has Sung
5. Winged/Wicked Things
6. Colt Stands Up, Grows Horns
7. Stallion
8. For the Pier (and dead shimmering)
9. The Taming of the Hands that Came Back to Life
10. Setting vs. Rising
11. Trumpet, Trumpet, Toot! Toot!
12. Child-Heart Losers

About a year ago Sunset Rubdown did the Daytrotter thing (which is awesome), and happened to play one of the songs which'll be on the upcoming album. Here are the tracks from that session.

::: Sunset Rubdown - Winged/Wicked Things
::: Sunset Rubdown - Jason, Believe Me, You Can't Trust Your Dreams
::: Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up, I'm Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings
::: Sunset Rubdown - They Took a Vote and Said No

Last but not least, let's not forget Swan Lake featuring Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug, and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes). Might I suggest playing this sucker during the morning routine, as I did this very day. The opening track kills me.

::: Swan Lake - Widow's Walk

Oh, and don't forget about Magic Weapon which involves Jordan Robson Cramer, the drummer/guitarist for Sunset Rubdown. They're recording new material this summer, or so says their myspace site.

So this has become long and meandering, but hopefully informative. Guess the lesson to take home today, kids, is that I'm looking forward to new Wolf Parade like none other.
